The intake and expelling of air within an aircraft is carefully manipulated to help power an aircraft. The turbocharger is just one component of a system of airflow that ducts air from the atmosphere, through combustion cylinders, resulting in a heating of the cabin or exhaust gas being expelled away from the aircraft through the exhaust system.

There are two main elements in a turbocharger; the compressor and the turbine. Exhaust gases are ducted from the main combustion chambers to the turbine. As the exhaust gases flow, they spin the turbine wheel. The more exhaust that passes through, the faster the turbine spins. A shaft connects the turbine to the compressor. Intake air is drawn in and compressed by the compressor. An impeller inside the compressor creates high pressure, high density air that is funneled to the combustion cylinders.

Manifold pressure is the pressure of air and fuel entering the engine manifold. An aircraft is equipped with a manifold pressure gauge that measures the absolute pressure of the fuel-air mixture inside the combustion chamber. Power output of an aircraft is controlled by the throttle. As the throttle setting is increased, more fuel and air flows into the engine and the manifold absolute pressure increases. The amount of power that the engine produces is directly linked to the pressure of the fuel-air mixture. If the pressure is high, the engine can produce more power.

As is the case with most circulatory systems, there are various valves that control the flow of air within this system. Exhaust gas, for the most part, flows into the turbocharger, however some of it is directed out of the aircraft using a butterfly valve contraption called a wastegate. If there is an excess of exhaust gas flowing into the turbocharger, the valve can be opened to release the exhaust gas into the atmosphere. Either automatic or manual procedures govern the waste valve.

A pilot must be considerate of the working condition of the turbocharger. If the turbocharger is not allowed to cool adequately, hard carbon deposits caused by boiling oil may form on the hardware.
