About BAE Systems Inc.

BAE Systems was formed on November 30, 1999 by the merger of British Aerospace and Marconi Electronic Systems. British Aerospace was a civil and military aircraft manufacturer, and had produced aircraft like the Aerospace 125 and 146 lines of business jets, the BAe/Avro Vulcan, the Harrier VTOL jet, and Concorde supersonic airliner. Marconi Electronic Systems was the defense industry arm of The General Electric Company, and produced electronic systems for various aircraft such as the ECR-90 radar for the Eurofighter Typhoon.                            

In the early 2000s, BAE Systems focused on expanding its business with the United States Department of Defense, as well as expanding its land-based and cyber-security divisions. In 2004, BAE purchased Alvis Vickers, the UK’s primary manufacturer of armored vehicles, and in 2005 acquired the US defense company United Defense Industries. Between 2008 and 2011, BAE purchased five cyber security companies, and in 2014 acquired the US intelligence company Signal Innovations Group Inc.

BAE has also sold off several divisions and investments it no longer sees as necessary to the company’s future. This includes its 25% share in Astrium, a spacecraft and satellite development company, to EADS. The company has also sold its shares of Thomas Marconi Sonar to Thales in 2001, and its share of SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems to Finmeccanica in March 2007.

Products

Aviation: BAE Systems produces aircraft and aircraft systems parts for numerous militaries around the world. BAE’s Typhoon fighter and Tornado fighter-bomber are both front-line aircraft for the British Royal Airforce, and its Hawk trainer is frequently used throughout the Commonwealth. BAE is also a major partner in the F-35 Lightning II program and is currently developing a replacement for the Typhoon dubbed “Tempest” intended to enter service in 2035.

Marine: BAE is heavily involved in marine production for the British Royal Navy, including the Astute-class nuclear submarine, the Type 26 frigate, and is a member of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance  partnership for producing the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy.

Land: BAE Systems Land and Armaments division manufactures the M2/M3 Bradley fighting vehicle family used by the US Army, the M113 APC, M109 Paladin, and M777 howitzer. For the British Army, BAE produces the Challenger II tank, Warrior armored vehicle, Panther command vehicle, and SA80 family of assault rifles.

Electronics: BAE produces electronics systems and sensors for aviation, land, and marine purposes, including aircraft avionics, electronic warfare systems, and flight simulators.

Systems Integration:  BAE offers integration services for adding new technology and upgrades to existing aircraft, naval vessels, and land vehicles.

Training: This division refers to training services offered by BAE Systems for personnel operating BAE-produced technology and vehicles.

Maintenance and Repairs: BAE’s maintenance and repair services includes a number of sites around the world meant to offer maintenance, repairs, and overhauls for BAE-produced equipment.
