About Sikorsky
The Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation was founded in Roosevelt Field, New York in May 1923 by Igor Sikorsky, an immigrant to the United States born in Kiev, Ukraine. In 1929, the company joined the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation (now known as United Technologies Corporation) and relocated to Stratford, Connecticut. Sikorsky initially focused on multi-engined land-based aircraft, and later amphibious aircraft. In the late 1930s however, sales declined, the company was merged with Vought Aircraft by United Aircraft, and Sikorsky began to focus on developing a working helicopter. Igor Sikorsky’s invention of adding a tail rotor to counter the main rotor’s torque stabilized the aircraft and made the concept a viable one. The Sikorsky R-4 entered production in 1942 and is the basis for most helicopter designs that have followed since then. Sikorsky remains one of the top helicopter manufacturers, producing aircraft for the United States military and its allies, as well as civilian versions of their models as well. In 1998, Sikorsky acquired Helicopter Supports Inc. to handle non-U.S. government after-market support for the Sikorsky products line. In February of 2009, Sikorsky Global Helicopters was created as a business unit of Sikorsky Aircraft to support the construction and marketing of commercial helicopters. In 2015, Lockheed Martin agreed to purchase Sikorsky from United Technologies Corporation for $9.0 billion, and now operates as their subsidiary.

Products, Services, and Platforms
Sikorsky specializes in the production of helicopters for the United States military and government, as well as the country’s allies. Civilian variants of several of Sikorsky’s models also exist, as well as models specifically for the civilian and utility market. Sikorsky’s production can be divided into:
Utility helicopters: Sikorsky’s most popular product is the UH-60 Black Hawk (classified as the S-70 on the civilian market). The UH-60 is a four-blade, twin-engine helicopter with medium lift capacities, and is typically used to transport squads of soldiers in and out of conflict zones. The UH-60 has multiple variants for other roles, including electronic warfare, nighttime and naval operations, and versions for export and foreign licensing. Other utility helicopters produced by Sikorsky include the SH-3 Sea King and CH-53K King Stallion.
Search and Rescue/Disaster Relief: Sikorsky helicopters are utilized by the United States Coast Guard, local government agencies, and foreign countries for search and rescue and disaster area relief missions.
Civilian Government: Sikorsky’s S-70 and SH-3 both serve as the official helicopter transportation for the president and vice-president of the United States. Marine One and Two are the official designation for any helicopter carrying the president or vice president, as they are piloted by US Marine Corps personnel. Sikorsky helicopters are also frequently used by federal and local law enforcement, firefighting, and business applications.
Trainers: The S-300C and its variants are a group of light helicopters most often used as a trainer aircraft by private schools.
Research and Development: Sikorsky continues to invest in and develop new technologies in the aviation industry. Fly-by-wire, automation systems, data analytics, and new propulsion methods are all avenues Sikorsky has explored.
