About MD Helicopters
MD Helicopters is an American helicopter manufacturer that produces rotary-wing aircraft for the civilian and military sectors. MD Helicopters traces its history back to the Hughes Tool Company, Aircraft Division, which began producing light helicopters in 1955, such as the TH-55 Osage, OH-6 Cayuse and AH-64 Apache. In 1984, Hughes sold its helicopter division to McDonnell Douglas, which maintained the original designs and designations. In 1997, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing to become the Boeing Company, and in 1999, Boeing sold the former McDonnell Douglas helicopter lines to MD Helicopter Holdings Inc, an indirect subsidiary of the Dutch company RDM Holding Inc. Included in this sale were the rights to the MD500E and MD 530F helicopters with conventional rotors, the MD 520N and MD600N with the NOTAR no tail rotor system, and the MD 902 Explorer. Boeing retained the AH-64 line of helicopters, and the rights to the NOTAR system. MD Helicopters Holdings Inc. was acquired in 2005 by Lynn Tilton, owner and founder of Patriarch Partners LLC, a private investment firm. The company was then recapitalized as MD Helicopters Inc., and based in Mesa, Arizona.
