About IBM
Founded in 1911 in Endicott, New York, IBM started as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR), and manufactured early examples of computing, such as commercial scales and time recorders, tabulators, and punch-card machines. Originally an amalgam of four different companies, they changed the company’s name to International Business Machines (IBM) in 1924, and wholly merged the subsidiaries in 1933. By 1937, IBM-produced tabulating equipment was used by numerous private and public clients, such as the U.S. government maintaining employment records for 26 million people as part of the Social Security Act. Throughout the 20th century, IBM products were part of some of the most important scientific advances of the 20th century, such as the Cold War space race and Apollo lunar missions. Working to recover from heavy losses in the early 1990s, IBM closed or sold off its consumer electronics divisions and focused on software, IT infrastructure and security, and cloud computing.
